Consulting for Hard Times
About preparation, survival and mitigation for hard times when possible, emergencies, local and or regional disasters, weather and striving to improve even in adversity. Working towards being prepared and living with some joy as well. Life worth living is life worth prepping for. Being Practical makes life easier in the long term. There are other resources out there, this is my humble attempt as well.

Update for the blog, finally July 2011
Grog's prepping and resource guide.
So you want to prep, but you have questions and or limitations. Be it Budget, Skills, what ever.
This not an end all, be all, know it all guide. Far far from it. Jerry D. Young at Jerry D. Young's Family Readiness Guideright click and save as for any mentioned works, same for Canuck in Denver from Canucks getting started guide both are Fantastic resources and are in depth but not overwhelming..
Even so, there are various ideas, guides etc. on the topic of prepping/survivalism.
My Goal is to help you help yourself with getting started. From there, better for you and those you care about. The links to other on line resources are both to inform you and educate you.
Any resource in this document not my own is given credit to the Author or Agency who generated the information. Due to the dynamic nature of the internet, over time links may change.
At the time of this document the links to those resources worked.
In 2004 ~2005 , I did an instructional lecture for an Oregon National Guard class, while working towards my Instructors Certification for the Non Commissioned Officers Academy team.
If you are interested it can be located here. 72 Hour Kit Presentation .
Here are the more important pieces of that presentation and some other information you may just find to be of use.
Now , please understand, this is for getting started and is at its core basic.
Why prep? Disaster, unemployment are two good reasons. Disaster is not always catastrophic. It could be something an extended power outage. Bad weather either flooding , severe rain, cold or even heat waves.
So now we begin:
•Identify what you need. If you are unable to walk, then your needs are going to be different that some one else.
•How to pack it in case of evacuation. Yes evacuation to a shelter or alternate location.
Too many cities lack this in their plans, so you have to do so for your self.
Most shelters are not taking pets, but may take assistant animals. Plan for your pets and assistance animals along with yourself.
•Special needs for you or a family member or neighbor. This goes hand in hand in the process.
Kit parts / components:
Water, Minimum 1 Gallon Per person per day, My suggestion 2 gallon per person and pet per day.
Food and prepare items pots, plates, flatware, heating can opener etc.
First aid supplies, Special Medications, for you , your pets or assistance animals etc.
Clothing and bedding, (remember weather conditions)
Tools and emergency supplies
Special items.
Now I am writing this with certain considerations.
-
You do not have a big budget.
-
You are getting started.
-
You do not have a BOL (Bug out Location) BOV (Bug out Vehicle) or BOB (Bug out Bag).
-
You have some time to get things going.
-
You are doing this by yourself, unless you have assistance like a family member or helper, situation depending. About Firearms, This topic is not covered or addressed. Each state/ county has specific regulations that must be met, I am not an Attorney and will not claim to have specific knowledge.
Note: You may have a vehicle, this writing bases a vehicle as not being 4 wheel drive, or EMP proof (Electrical Magnetic Pulse), Uses Gasoline, not Diesel.
Some items in your kit may be:
Can opener, heating equipment for food or drink, (e.g. Sterno and stove, heat tabs, MREs with heaters etc.)
Flashlight with batteries and spare bulbs. Radio with AM/FM battery powered or hand crank powered and a pre paid phone card)Addresses and phone numbers of relatives or friends to contact, use a source for family communications A friend can get the calls you can not, and inform other members of where you are and who has called (Great for when you must evacuate). Hygiene items, toothbrush, dental floss, toothpaste, soap, tampons/maxi pads, shampoo, razors, lotion if needed. Store water in plastic containers such as soft drink bottles. Avoid using containers that will decompose or break, such as milk cartons or glass bottles.
A normally active person needs to drink at least two quarts of potable water each day. ( note I personally recommend doubling this per person per day.)
Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount. If you are in cold weather, you still need to stay hydrated, so again stock up as much as possible on water. Yes weight and storage space are a big consideration.
Children, nursing mothers and ill people will need more.
Water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies and special items.
Keep the items that you would most likely need during an evacuation in easy to carry containers.
Suggested items are marked with an asterisk (*).
Possible containers include a large, covered trash container, Camping Backpack, or a Duffle bag. Store two gallons of water per person and pet per day (one gallon and two quarts for drinking, two quarts for food preparation/sanitation).
Keep at least a three-day supply of water for each person and pet in your household.
Store at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food. Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking and little or no water. If you must heat food, pack a can of gelled fuel. Select food items that are compact and lightweight. (bring a small pot to cook in)
Include a selection of the following in your kit:
Multivitamins, prescription medications and foods for infants, elderly persons or persons on special diets. Note check with your Primary Care Provider about medications.
Comfort/stress foods cookies, hard candy, sweetened cereals lollipops, instant coffee, tea bags.
Foods should be easy to prepare, if canned, make a second non electrically powered can opener available in your kit.
•Entertainment, Games and books
•Important Family Documents
•Keep these records in a waterproof, portable container:
–Will, insurance policies, contracts deeds, stocks and bonds
–Passports, social security cards, immunization records
–Bank account numbers
–Credit card account numbers and companies
•Inventory of valuable household goods, important telephone numbers
•Family records (birth, marriage, death certificates)
•Store your kit in a convenient place known to all family members. Keep a smaller version of the Disaster Supplies Kit in the trunk of your car.
•Keep items in airtight plastic bags. Change your stored water supply every six months so it stays fresh. Replace your stored food every six months. Re-think your kit and family needs at least once a year. Replace batteries, update clothes, etc.
•Heart and high blood pressure medication
• Insulin
• Prescription drugs
• Denture needs
• Contact lenses and supplies
•Extra eye glasses
•Ask your physician or pharmacist about storing prescription medications.
Now how does one get a kit put together? Good Question.
Here are some suggestions for assembling a kit over the course of 12 months.
Week 1: Get 1 or better 2 Gallons of Water, Note Distilled water is NOT what you want.
Distilled Water does not contain the minerals your body needs for hydration. The two and a half gallon containers tend to leak in my personal experience, so get 1 gallon bottles. If this is hard to store, get the 12 ounce or liter bottles. This may be a bit higher in price, so be aware that in addition to the water, you may have a per bottle deposits, Distilled water can still be used, but ensure you are eating to provide electrolytes.
1 Large Jar Peanut Butter 2 cans of ready to drink fruit juice. (Juice not punch which traditionally has more chemicals and fewer nutrients.) Manual can opener, Canned meat 2 each (note the type is up to you, check for sodium if this is a concern for you.)
Permanent marker to mark containers for buy dates and label your containers.
More on marking buy dates later, when discussing food rotation.
If applicable: Pet Food, Baby food and diapers (Note Diapers may be adjusted, depending on the baby, a six month old is not a 2 year old, so keep this in mind. I will not debate disposable versus re useable, however sanitation and hygiene should guide your decision.)
To do: Decide on and notify out-of-area contact who can coordinate information for scattered family members.
Week 2, Heavy cotton or hemp rope, 2 flashlights with batteries, Waterproof matches for outside use, ONLY with appropriate stove or grill. Leash or pet carrier Extra set of I.D. tags
Things To Do: Sign up for First Aid/CPR classes, Red Cross and American Heart Association both train CPR.
Trash bags for waste, garbage.
Toilet Paper and diaper wipes, soap, hand sanitizers, resealable container with lid or "portapotty" (for extended use if you are sheltering in place and there are water supply issues )
First aid Kit suggested items are:
Sterile adhesive bandages in assorted sizes
2-inch sterile gauze pads (4-6)
4-inch sterile gauze pads (4-6)
Hypoallergenic adhesive tape
Triangular bandages (3)
2-inch sterile roller bandages (3 rolls)
3-inch sterile roller bandages (3 rolls)
Scissors
Tweezers
Needle
Moistened towelettes
Antiseptic
Thermometer(Non Mercury and Non digital with case)
Tongue blades (2)
Tube of petroleum jelly or other lubricant
Additional medications as needed by family members (babies, elderly)
Assorted sizes of safety pins
Cleansing agent/soap
Latex gloves (2 pair)
Sunscreen
Non-prescription drugs Aspirin or non aspirin pain reliever
Anti-diarrhea medication
Antacid (for stomach upset)
Syrup of Ipecac (use to induce vomiting if advised by the Poison Control Center) Laxative
Activated charcoal (use if advised by the Poison Control Center)
CPR Mask
Optional additions : Portable Ice packs, Heat packs, SAM Splint, Space Blanket
•NOTE check any and all medications for expiration dates, check the kit and re stock when used or every 6 months minimum!
Include a selection of the following foods in your Disaster Supplies Kit:
Multivitamins, prescription medications and foods for infants, elderly persons or persons on special diets. Note check with your Primary Care Provider about medications.
Comfort/stress foods cookies, hard candy, sweetened cereals lollipops, instant coffee, tea bags.

And the same with:
•Heart and high blood pressure medication
• Insulin
• Prescription drugs
• Denture needs
• Contact lenses and supplies
•Extra eye glasses
•Ask your physician or pharmacist about storing prescription medications.

There is more information available here: http://survivalistssite.com/~grog/7DaySurvivalKit.pdf Note this is a product from the State of Alaska Emergency Management.
As we go on, there will be other links to on line resources. I encourage you to get the information, print it out and get it into binders that you keep two sets of, one in your kit, the other where you can read, review and adjust as your needs change.
Again this is not an all in one solution. This is simply a guide.
If you have camping gear, this is a plus, a sleeping bag and tent are shelter. Even if power goes out, setting up an interior shelter in your home may help to mitigate inclement weather.
I have put the link to the sub site on Http://survivalistssite.com/~grog as the url directly to the pdf has gaps in it that do not render properly for download.
I have put this together as information at the most basic level. You may be more advanced, if so great.
There are several other sources out there. Some are better than others. Some are strictly fear based to entice you to purchase from specific sites. I am not listing those sites in this document.
I may list certain products as nice to have, but please do not consider these to be any sort of recommendation to purchase. Example Hand cranked / dynamo powered radio or Water Filter. Both are important, but shop around. I try to avoid gadgets. Quality tools, be they hand tools or multi tools are not gadgets.
Other basic information can be found at http://ready,gov there is another site that gets into some detail as to what is lacking from the information the ready.gov site. Federation of American Scientists.org Really Ready .
Now then from personal experience I assembled my kit using the following ideas.
-
I looked over my kitchen for stuff on hand, I had 4 can openers all manual. Two each went into a storage tub I already had. I added two flashlights with spare bulbs and two sets each of batteries. I had an AM Crystal Radio Build your self kit, into the container it went, along with a 9 volt powered AM/FM/SW receiver, also a build it yourself kit and saved my money to specifically purchase a hand cranked dynamo powered AM/FM radio that also can charge my cell phone. AM Amplitude , FM Frequency Modulated , SW Short wave.
2. I had some MREs, and a propane single burner stove. Into the kit they went. I found over the years I had 2. Both are now in the kit, with two bottles each of propane fuel.
-
I added a few boxes of strike any where matches, stuffed into two ziplock gallon sized bags to further protect them. The same with 8 rolls of toilet paper with cores removed to reduce space. This, with 5 gallons of bottled water and some first aid items went into the kit. So did a camping cooking kit. This was a start. Adding some space blankets filled two containers. Not everything, true but better than nothing.
The items were gathered over the years, as I had been a bit of a camper and starting after getting out of the Army, This was pre Y2k (year 2000). Over time, the MREs were replaced, batteries rotated out. Over the Counter meds are packed, checked and rotated. The newest ones go into the kit. The older ones are rotated into the house. I do the same with canned food. To make things easier on top of each container contents I put an inventory sheet with item and date added.

I am moving shortly, this is inducing me to re pack my stuff and re think things like
storage, even just the day to day stuff, with a smaller over all shelter situation, including a smaller kitchen and pantry.
This also is going to make me re plan things like evacuation routes from the new location, and planning for other contingencies.
More as it happens.

I linked their project list, but there's a wealth of information available on other pages within the site. I especially liked the links for the rocket stove and GLI Firefox (solar stirling engine). Unfortuantely, a few links are broken.
Thoughts, comments?

Feb 2011 Start Gardening now
Starting with the seeding process, One may be able to get in a good amount of veggies when outside conditions improve.
Thesurvivalpodcast.com
and Saveourskills.com both have good information.
Your local county agricultural extension office may be a good resource as well.
Sadly not all states have such offices in every county, so you may need to look up the state ag college extension office or website instead.

10 Jan 2011 plan review time
Working under the theory that I have a finite capacity for transportation in the event of having to perhaps relocate due to one emergency or another, I am reviewing my supplies, equipment and cargo capacities.
Working with the idea that my cat does go with me, regular shelters are out of the question.
The two big concerns are potable water in supply, and petro chemicals for the automobile. The second is due to the fact that my alternative locations require passing over bridges, and while I can use other routes, some are farther than others, thus increasing travel time and distance.

If the power goes out, do you have an address book with this information available that does not require power?
Also review your evacuation or travel plans and routes, take in account the weather and limited visibility at this time of year, including temperatures and rising fuel prices.

Regional Weather ala La Nina
Sadly , most car drivers out here have short term memory and forget that every two to four years, since at least the 1970's Bad weather happens in Winter.
While not a native per se, I have been in and out of the Northwest for the last three decades, and I remember.
Here are a few examples of the weather reports over the last 48 to 72 hours.

Recipe: Quick and Easy
1/2 cup yellow or red onion, finely diced
1/2 cup each green and red bell peppers, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced (optional)
1 tbsp butter or olive oil
1 pkg tofu, well drained and cubed (medium-firm or firmer, could also use reconstituted)
1 can (2 cups) pre-cooked black beans, rinsed and drained
1/2 tsp each cumin, oregano, chili powder
salt and pepper, to taste
flour tortillas
shredded cheese
fresh tomatoes/avocados/cilantro to taste
Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. (I use non-stick for filling and my cast iron for heating tortillas.) Add onions and bell peppers; saute until onions are translucent. Add garlic and jalapeno and saute for about 1 minute. Add herbs/spices, stirring frequently until fragrant. Add tofu and spread out as a single layer in the skillet. Once tofu is golden brown (2-3 minutes) stir and cook other side. Once both sides are cooked, push tofu to outer edges of the pan and add black beans. Toss gently to incorporate tofu, spices, and vegetable mixture. Once beans are brought to temperature, reduce heat to simmer and cover. Let simmer for approximately 10 minutes.
While mixture is simmering, heath cast iron skillet or griddle to medium heat. Also have ready an oven-proof plate or platter and a clean kitchen towel. Add about 2 tsp bacon grease or butter and melt completely. With tongs, place flour tortillas (one at a time) into skillet, until tortilla begins to puff; turn over and repeat. (Be ready they puff quickly!) Once tortilla is cooked on both sides, place on platter and cover with a layer of kitchen towel; alternate towel between tortillas. Keep warm in oven if not serving immediately.
Serve tofu and black bean mixture with tortillas, shredded cheese, and any other accompaniments you and your family have with meat tacos. Muy Bien!

Things have been very interesting, with the various changes in life mode and life style.
Working on a few things in the great experiment called life. Divorce and being under water on the house.
Prepping should be able to include things like relocation. Honor requires that the house be dealt with first as this is not a disaster reason for relocation. As such the blog , here has been some what put to the back burner, so to speak. The economy is what it is, and I am fairly certain it will stay this way for a long time, perhaps decades. Yes Decades. Best suggestion I can give is reduce your over all debt, get involved with getting your "act" together, if you are not doing so already. As to savings, well if there is inflation / deflation, etc, Look into stockpiling things like food, water and the like, additionally Watch the spending that you do.
Get involved locally, Groups who community garden are generating food or medicinal herbs and the like,
While not saying do not use conventional medicine , if you can do alternatives first and not have to pay for health care, great. For those of you / us who need it, use it , but get informed, communicate and this also means LISTEN, not just Talk. As to those who claim to have all the answers, Do your OWN research. Seriously!.
Get fit, learn a new skill or several, perhaps a few that may even help to generate some income, barter is not a bad thing, though the IRS wants numbers for income and the like, Do not blame the IRS itself,
Read up on Government at all levels, and then you just may find that you are paying more than just taxes.
a thought, if you want civics lessons, start reading the United States of America's Constitution, Not what ever commentator says, Read it for your self, Go on from there.
This is not a rant, but seriously things got where they are now for a reason. That reason? Too much blind obeying what some one said and attempted to make policy or law, not enough, "Hey wait a minute!" and "This is not what we want, not in this form any way."
As much as we may feel we are failed, part of that failure is lack of involvement, be it preps, live style or economy. Thus end the post to the blog, hopefully 99 Per cent Rant free.
Thanks for viewing.

Heat, August 2010
Chicago placed under first excessive heat warning since 2006
It's been four years since Chicago has been placed under an "excessive heat warning" by the National Weather Service. The current warning runs through 7 p.m. Friday as do the heat advisories which have been hoisted over the remainder of the Chicago area.

Guidelines for the issuance of such advisories were developed in the wake of the city's deadly July 1995 heat wave. To this day -- 15 years later -- the event, which claimed more than 700 lives, remains Chicago's single worst natural disaster. In that hot spell, temperatures soared to 106 degrees at Midway Airport which, in tandem with stifling atmospheric moisture levels that included dew points of 82 degrees, led to a never-before-seen 125-degree heat index here.
The elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions aggravated by the onset of heat comprised the majority of the deadly heat wave's victims. But the extent of death at the time took area residents and officials by surprise and led to a major effort to more clearly understand the combination of atmospheric conditions which were capable of generating such human carnage.
The current hot spell, which is expected to ease late this weekend and early next week, isn't anywhere near as extreme. Neither temperatures nor humidities will come close to 1995's off-the-charts levels. But the low to mid 90s predicted Thursday and Friday coupled with oppressive afternoon dew points at or above 75 degrees will lead to a 98 to 107-degree peak heat indices.
Deaths from heat top those which occur in all other weather extremes
Far from being just a nuisance, heat is the most deadly of all extreme weather events. The number who perish annually across the U.S. as a result of extreme heat exceeds those killed by tornadoes, flash floods, hurricanes, lightning or cold weather.
There are now estimates that as many as 15,000 may have already died in Russia in the record heat wave which is predicted to continue there for the foreseeable future after a brief break Wednesday. And the final tally could end up even worse. Summer temperatures have reached 100 degrees at Moscow weather stations in the past several months, the first time in 130 years of weather records there that triple-digit reading have occurred.
Temperatures in Moscow for the meteorological summer season which began June 1 have topped 90 degrees on 31 days and have reached or exceeded 100 degrees five days -- a stunning development in a city with "normal" summer highs in the low to mid 70s. The summer season there has averaged a remarkable 9.6 degrees above normal. All are stats which place the modest nature of Chicago's latest flirtation with heat and humidity in perspective.
Heat Thursday extends 80-degree streak to 42 days -- the most here in 55 years
Wednesday's 90-degree high at O'Hare became the official site's 16th day at or above 90 degrees while Midway's 91-degree reading marked the South Side site's 18th such day. Not even the day's lake breeze was able to spare the city's lakefront from a rendezvous with heat. Northerly Island topped out at 93.

Fewer thunderstorms than in many recent weeks here are to provide a backdrop for the hot temperatures predicted Thursday and Friday. Thermometer readings are predicted to top out at 94 Thursday and 95 Friday. Each reading would tie or exceed 2010's highest temperature to date: 94 degrees at O'Hare and 95 degrees at Midway and the lakefront recorded back on July 23. It also assures the city's record for consecutive 80 degree or higher temperatures based on over 140 years of official weather records will occur Thursday and that a new record will be established Friday.
St. Louis really hot; a 50th day over 90 due Thursday
As hot as Chicago's weather will be the next few days, residents of St. Louis -- where the temperature hit 100 degrees Wednesday and the heat index topped out at 112 degrees -- are to mark 2010's 50th day at or above 90 degrees Thursday. There could be another 100-degree reading today.
Seventeen states remain under heat advisories or excessive heat warnings the remainder of the work week.
Huge pattern change has an early autumnal look next week
Big changes in North America's weather pattern loom. The dome of warm air so frequently a part of the meteorological scene over Greenland and the northwest Atlantic in recent years -- the feature referenced so often here as the "Greenland Block" -- gets back in business in the coming week. It's predicted by computer models that it will produce strong ridging over the western Atlantic, which induces strong troughing aloft over central North America. The northwest steering winds that will run from Canada into the nation's heartland will arrive late this weekend and into next week. They have an early autumn look and promise to drop temperatures and humidities here.
But it's unlikely we've seen the last of this year's hot weather. Warming is predicted again the following weekend.
Heat Index Chart
| The Heat Index is the temperature the body feels when heat and humidity are combined. The chart below shows the Heat Index that corresponds to the actual air temperature and relative humidity. This chart is based upon shady, light wind conditions. Exposure to direct sunlight can increase the Heat Index by up to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. |

Sweating cools the body through evaporation. However, high relative humidity retards evaporation, robbing the body of its ability to cool itself. When heat gain exceeds the level the body can remove, body temperature begins to rise, and heat-related illnesses and disorders may develop.
If you must be out in the heat:
- Limit your outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
- Cut down on exercise. If you must exercise, drink two to four glasses of cool, nonalcoholic fluids each hour. A sports beverage can replace the salt and minerals you lose in sweat.
Warning: If you are on a low-salt diet, talk with your doctor before drinking a sports beverage.
- Try to rest often in shady areas.
- Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat (also keeps you cooler) and sunglasses and by putting on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher (the most effective products say "broad spectrum" or "UVA/UVB protection" on their labels).
Safety During a Heat Wave

A heat advisory or warning has been issued. Now what do you do? Before Exposure
Risk of Heat Cramps, Exhaustion, and Heat Stroke
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Because heat-related deaths are preventable, people need to be aware of who is at greatest risk and what actions can be taken to prevent a heat-related illness or death.
The elderly, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases are at highest risk. However, even young and healthy individuals can succumb to heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather.
People in urban areas are at high risk, too, because the stagnant atmospheric conditions trap pollutants in the air, which, when breathed can trigger respiratory problems for many people.
Other conditions related to risk include age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn, and prescription drug and alcohol use.
The effects of extreme heat can undermine physical well-being so slowly and subtly that the dangers aren't apparent until it's too late.
In regions of low humidity, the most common human response to extreme heat is dehydration. Exposed to direct sunlight and temperatures in excess of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, a human can lose as much as half a gallon of water every 10 minutes, and this dehydration can seriously interfere with one's internal thermostat.
Heat-Related Illnesses
No matter where you live, it is important to recognize the real dangers of extreme heat and take action to offset its impact at its earliest stages.
The gradual nature of extreme heat's effects on the body makes it important to be aware of heat-related illnesses:
- So much more than a dermatologic issue, sunburn reduces the skin's ability to release excess heat, making the body more susceptible to heat-related illness.
- Muscle pains and spasms caused by heavy exertion, which triggers heavy perspiration. These usually involve the muscles of the abdomen or legs.
- A mild form of shock marked by heavy sweating, weakness, cold, clammy skin, a weak pulse, fainting and vomiting. This usually occurs when people have been exercising heavily or working in a warm humid place. Blood flow to the skin increases -- in an attempt to cool the body -- causing blood flow to vital organs to decrease.
If not treated, a victim's condition can worsen; the body temperature can keep rising, possibly leading to heat stroke.
- A truly life-threatening condition in which the body's internal thermostat has ceased to work. The ability to sweat stops, and the body's temperature can rise so high that brain damage and death may occur in 10-15 minutes unless medical help is immediate.
If you are in the peak summer months, and the temperature and/or humidity has been unusually high for several days, anticipate an extreme heat emergency situation.
Keep an eye on The Weather Channel and weather.com to track the heat index and to get information about excessive heat potential.
Although threshold criteria may vary depending on the location, two kinds of alerts are generally issued.
- Issued when the heat, or combination of heat and humidity, is expected to become an inconvenience for much of the population, and a problem for some.
- Issued when the heat, or combination of heat and humidity, is expected to be dangerous for a large portion of the population.
